MINI Countryman vs Volkswagen T-Roc
Compact SUVs, or crossover SUVs, are a type of sport utility vehicle (SUV) that are smaller in size than traditional full-size SUVs. They have become a favourite among consumers because they offer the elevated seating position and all-weather capabilities of larger SUVs while being more convenient to drive and park. Additionally, they generally provide more cargo space and more flexible seating arrangements than hatchbacks, making them an ideal choice for families.
In this article, we’ve decided to review two popular compact SUVs to see how they compare. We’ll look at the key features, price, safety and design of the MINI Countryman and Volkswagen T-Roc. But first, let’s delve deeper into the history of these fantastic cars from MINI and Volkswagen.
A Brief History
First introduced in 2017, The Volkswagen T-Roc is a compact SUV which is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf. The T-Roc was first unveiled as a concept car at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The production version was unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it went on sale in Europe shortly thereafter. The T-Roc is designed to appeal to a younger, more adventurous demographic. In 2021, the T-Roc received a modest upgraded with new features such as redesigned LED taillights, and new colour options.
In 2010, MINI introduced the first generation of the Countryman which was the first MINI model to have four doors. Seven years later, the second generation of the Countryman was unveiled, featuring a larger size, a more modern design, and built on the same platform as the BMW X1. This version came with an upgraded infotainment system and advanced safety features, and for the first time in the MINI brand, a hybrid powertrain option was offered. The latest version, the third generation Countryman, was released in 2021 and boasts electric powertrain options and a more spacious interior.

Design, Safety and Technology
The MINI Countryman has a distinctive and stylish design that is true to the MINI brand. Some of the key design features of this MINI include the brand's signature round headlights, hexagonal grille, and the iconic side scuttle that gives it a unique and playful look. The latest generation Countryman also has a more rugged look with a larger and more assertive front grille. Inside the Countryman, it has a spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room for both the driver and passengers. In particular, consumers will be impressive with the generous 450-litre boot capacity, extending to 1,390 litres with the seats folded. Additionally, the MINI Countryman offers a wide range of customisation options, from exterior paint colours to different wheel designs and sizes, to interior trim and upholstery options.
Meanwhile, the Volkswagen T-Roc boasts a sporty and expressive design, incorporating many of the design elements that are characteristic of the Volkswagen brand. The T-Roc's exterior features sharp lines, a wide stance, and a distinctive front grille. Inside, the interior is spacious and comfortable, with high-quality materials and a modern, minimalist design. There’s generous head and legroom both front and rear, as well as a 445-litre boot capacity for all your luggage. The VW T-Roc is also loaded with advanced technology features that enhance the driving experience and connect the driver to the digital world. It comes with an infotainment system that features a touch screen display, providing access to a variety of apps and services such as navigation, music, and hands-free calling. Additionally, it has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, allowing drivers to seamlessly connect their smartphones to the car and access their apps, music, and contacts. Other technology features include a rear-view camera, a keyless entry and parking sensors. In terms of safety features, the T-Roc is equipped with a range of advanced driver-assistance systems, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.
Get behind the wheel with peace of mind! The MINI Countryman and Volkswagen T-Roc have both earned a prestigious 5-star rating from Euro NCAP, solidifying their status as some of the safest compact SUVs on the market. Euro NCAP noted that both cars performed exceptionally well in their assessments, especially for adult occupant protection.

Engines, MPG Figures and Performance
Another aspect to consider when looking at compact SUVs is the available engine options. Currently, neither of these vehicles come in a pure electric option. The entry model of the MINI Countryman features a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine that generates 136bhp and has a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds. It is worth noting that some reviewers have reported the steering of the Countryman to be heavier compared to alternatives. For those looking for extra power, the Countryman also offers a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 178bhp, or the high-performance MINI Countryman John Cooper Works with a staggering 306bhp. Alternatively, for enhanced fuel efficiency up to 156.9mpg combined, the MINI Countryman Plug-In Hybrid pairs a 1.5-liter engine with an electric motor to produce 220bhp. Previous diesel engine options have now been discontinued.
In comparison, the Volkswagen T-Roc is available with both diesel and petrol engine options. Currently, there’s are three petrol options, with the 1.0-litre TSI with three cylinders offering the best fuel efficiency of 47.1mpg (combined). Producing 109bhp, it accelerates from 0-62mph in a competitive 10.8 seconds, making it a close match for the larger 1.5-litre MINI Countryman. If you would prefer a diesel engine, choose between the 148bhp 2.0-litre or the 113bhp 2.0-litre diesel. If you regularly make long motorway trips, the 148bhp diesel engine is a better fit. It’s worth noting that the Volkswagen T-Roc isn’t available as a pure electric or hybrid option. Reportedly, the VW T-Roc feels agile on the road and offers lighter steering than the MINI Countryman.

Price & Warranty
Another key area to look at is pricing for both the T-Roc and Countryman. Of course, pricing varies depending on the specific trim level and options you choose. The VW T-Roc is available with four trim levels – Life, Style, R-Line and R. Pricing starts from £26,210 for the entry-level ‘Life’ trim and goes up to £42,285 for the sporty T-Roc R. Whereas the MINI Countryman starts slightly higher at £28,815 for the Cooper Classic model. This rises to just under £40,000 for the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works.
We recommend the entry-level Life trim for the T-Roc because it provides an efficient balance between cost and standard equipment. It comes with automatic wipers, two-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control and 16” alloy wheels. However, if you choose the top-spec R model, this gets all wheel drive - 4Motion, 'R' styling pack, bigger 18” alloy wheels and silver roof rails.
Similarly, the MINI Countryman is available in a range of models and trims. Also, depending on the model selected, you can add optional packs to make this your ideal personal car. With the Premium Plus pack from £1,200, you get extra features such as rear auto-dimming mirror and a panoramic roof.
The MINI Countryman comes with a standard UK warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, while the Volkswagen T-Roc has a standard warranty of 3 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Both the MINI and Volkswagen warranties also include a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty for added protection.
Our Verdict: MINI Countryman or Volkswagen T-Roc?
This is a tricky question to answer as it ultimately depends on the specific preferences of the individual. Both the MINI Countryman and Volkswagen T-Roc offer smart interiors with plenty of standard equipment. However, the MINI Countryman is known for its sporty and fun-to-drive nature, while the Volkswagen T-Roc offers a more refined and practical option. So, which car would you choose?
