What Is A Maintenance Contract?
For a fixed monthly fee, a maintenance package takes the headache out of getting your new vehicle serviced and maintained. By taking out a maintenance contract, the vehicle’s servicing, maintenance and MOT testing costs will be covered for the duration of the contract. Every vehicle on the road needs to be serviced (usually yearly, depending on the manufacturer's guidelines), so for a fixed monthly fee, costs including servicing, parts and labour are covered.
What does a maintenance contract cover?
Most maintenance packages cover the following:
- Manufacturers' scheduled servicing which includes all replacement parts.
- Mechanical and electrical repairs and/or replacements including labour. (This is covered by warranty and your maintenance package will extend this should your warranty expire.)
- All replacement parts required as a result of fair wear and tear.
- MOT (if required)
- Roadside assistance for the full contract period.
Some maintenance packages also include (or can be added):
- Breakdown cover (depending on the funder).
- Replacement vehicle.
- European roadside recovery.
Benefits of a maintenance contract
The main benefits of a maintenance contract include:
- Easy one call / click booking process.
- Planned fixed-cost budgeting (the package is tailored to your mileage and contract length).
- Lower overall vehicle running costs.
- Peace of mind – no unexpected maintenance costs.
- Your maintenance package will extend the warranty should your warranty expire.

Self-Maintained
The table below shows the typical costs for some parts and servicing of the car. When leasing a vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is serviced as per the manufacturer's schedule. If you're deciding whether to add maintenance to your contract, you should consider the cost of everything you might need over the length of your contract (replacement tyres, servicing, etc).
All vehicles need to be serviced/maintained in relation to the manufacturer's guidelines. This is a cost you need to budget for and spreading this over the period of your lease will give you peace of mind and stop any unexpected large bills. The finance companies offer a very cost efficient way of covering these costs through a heavily discounted full maintenance contract.

Warranties and maintenance packages are separate things, although they are intrinsically linked. Warranty covers mechanical and electrical breakdowns on your vehicle. Whereas, a maintenance package covers servicing and maintaining your vehicle. It's important to ensure your vehicle is well-maintained as it may invalidate your warranty if it's not maintained properly and regularly.
The majority of manufacturer’s warranties last for 3 years (although some can last up to seven years) and may have mileage limits applied. Warranties don’t usually cover routine servicing. However, with a maintenance package, routine servicing (including parts and labour) and maintaining your vehicle is covered. You get peace of mind knowing that your costs are budgeted for across the term of your contract. Your maintenance package will extend the warranty should your warranty expire during the term of your lease contract.
Every vehicle on the road needs to be serviced (usually yearly, depending on the manufacturer's guidelines). You also need to ensure your leased vehicle is well-maintained otherwise your manufacturer’s warranty may become invalid. That said, the manufacturer's offer heavily discounted full maintenance cover.
When thinking about your new vehicle lease it is easy to think you’ll save money by NOT opting for a maintenance contract as it will usually increase your monthly rental or payment. What you really need to think about is the whole life cost of the maintenance and servicing of your new vehicle.
