A Brief History
The Volkswagen ID.4 is an all-electric compact SUV that was introduced by Volkswagen in 2020. The ID.4 is intended to be a global vehicle, and it is being produced and sold in markets around the world. As the first electric SUV from Volkswagen, the ID.4 is built on the automaker’s bespoke electric car platform known as the MEB platform. Last year, over 52,000 sales of the VW ID.4 were made in Europe, and this remains a highly desirable electric car.
Similarly, the Skoda Enyaq iV was only introduced in 2020. This new model was significant as it was Skoda’s first electric SUV, ideal for families looking to switch to electric. It is produced at Skoda’s main plant in Mlada Boleslav and comes equipped with plenty of tech-savvy features. Although the Enyaq in also available in coupe form, for this comparison we’ve decided to focus on the SUV version. Read on to discover more.

Design, Safety and Technology
The Volkswagen ID.4 is a modern and stylish electric SUV, designed to appeal to those looking for a vehicle that combines sustainability, performance and luxury. The exterior design of the ID.4 is sleek and aerodynamic, characterized by its smooth body lines, and a distinctive LED light bar at the front. Inside, the VW ID4 offers a spacious interior, with a roomy cabin and a 543-litre boot space. This is quite a bit smaller than the Skoda Enyaq's 585 litres, but still large enough to store a significant amount of luggage. Also, the VW ID.4's dashboard layout is simple, with a large infotainment system that is easy to navigate, and it offers a variety of advanced technology features such as wireless charging and digital instrument cluster.
Meanwhile, the Skoda Enyaq iV stands out for its unique styling, excellent boot capacity and value for money. Reportedly, the interior of the Enyaq iV feels a little more luxurious than its rival thanks to premium materials used throughout. Plus, it comes with ample kit as standard including LED headlights, cruise control and rear parking sensors. The infotainment system is powered by the latest generation of Skoda's MIB3 system, which is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Additionally, the Enyaq iV also comes with a 10.25-inch digital driver display that can show you a range of information such as speed, navigation instructions, and energy consumption. As for the exterior, the front of the vehicle features the brand's signature grille, which is finished in black and is closed off to improve aerodynamics. The LED headlights are slim and sleek, and they are connected to the grille. The car has a sporty and dynamic look with a sloping roofline.
Both the Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID.4 have received top marks of five stars by Euro NCAP, showcasing their status as some of the safest electric vehicles available in the market. According to Euro NCAP, the Enyaq and ID.4 both performed exceptionally well in their assessments and have only minor differences in their scores. In fact, both cars scored over 90% for protection of adult occupants.

Range & Performance
The Skoda Enyaq offers a variety of power outputs and drive configurations to choose from. The 60 and 80 models both feature rear-wheel drive and produce 177bhp and 201bhp respectively. The performance difference between these two is not significant, partly due to the 80 model having to carry a heavier battery pack. The 80X model offers four-wheel drive, providing better traction to utilise its 261bhp. Both rear-wheel drive models offer quick acceleration, with the 60 going from 0-60mph in around 8.5 seconds. Compared to the closely related Volkswagen ID.4, the performance is similar. As for electric range, 80 version has a greater battery range, capable of reaching up to 333 miles on a full charge, with the 60 version having a respectable 256-mile official range. Reportedly, the ride of this electric car is smoother on faster roads, providing comfort levels comparable to the VW ID4. Whereas it tends to be slightly less stable in urban environments.
The VW ID.4 comes with a choice of two battery options, 52kWh and 77kWh, and power outputs that range from 148bhp to 299bhp. This electric car offers a driving range of up to 328 miles, depending on the variant you choose. To narrow down the options, we've highlighted a few key versions of the VW ID.4: the entry-level Pure version is equipped with a 52kWh battery and 148bhp, it offers a range of 223 miles on a single charge and a 0-62mph time of 10.9 seconds. The Pro Performance version offers more power with 204bhp and a maximum range of 328 miles. Lastly, the sporty GTX trim has advanced performance, it comes with a 77kWh battery and 299bhp, and a range of 308 miles on a single charge.

Price
The price of the Skoda Enyaq iV and the Volkswagen ID.4 can vary depending on the specific trim level and options you choose. However, in general, the Volkswagen ID.4 tends to be slightly more affordable than the Skoda Enyaq iV.
The Skoda Enyaq price starts from £38,970 for the 60 model while the Volkswagen ID.4 is priced from £38.845. The Skoda Enyaq 60 model is available in various trim levels – Loft, Lounge, Suite and ecoSuite. In particular, the Enyaq 60 Loft comes with dual-zone climate control, a 13" touchscreen display, 8 speakers, Bluetooth and DAB Digital radio as standard. The Skoda Enyaq 80 model is available in the same trim levels with prices starting from £42,925 and rising to £51,765 for the 80x Sportline Plus.
On the other hand, the entry-level VW ID.4 Life Edition from £38,845 comes well equipped as standard. Highlights include heated front seats, 18" Falun alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control and traction control. As a mid-range model, the ID.4 Style Edition starts from £42,250. This comes with a panoramic sunroof, velour seat trim, rain sensor and heated steering wheel. Alternatively, the sporty ID.4 GTX version is available from £52,865. This gets bigger 20” alloy wheels, heated wing mirrors, keyless entry and sporty suspension.
Reliability & Warranty
Electric vehicles, in general, boast a simpler design compared to traditional petrol and diesel cars, featuring fewer components prone to malfunction. Overall, the Skoda Enyaq has garnered praise for its reliability with only rare glitches. Operating the Enyaq proves to be straightforward, aligning with Skoda's established reputation for crafting dependable cars. In comparison, the Volkswagen ID4 is reported to be reasonably reliable so far. It's worth noting that, as these are both relatively recent additions, they lack an extensive reliability history so we can only base this on recent data.
As for warranty cover, the standard warranty for the Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID.4 in the UK is the same. Both electric cars come with a 3-year/60,000 miles warranty for the vehicle and an 8-year/100,000 miles warranty for the battery. Additionally, both Skoda and Volkswagen also offer an extended warranty option which can be purchased for an additional cost.

Comparing the Skoda Enyaq iV and the VW ID.4 is a matter of personal preference and depends on the specific features and capabilities that you are looking for in an electric vehicle. Both electric cars are built on the same MEB platform and they share many mechanical components, so they offer similar levels of ride comfort, handling, and performance. That said, there are some key differences between the two.
The Enyaq iV and ID.4 both boast high safety ratings, but they have distinct design characteristics. The Enyaq iV has a more classic SUV look, offering more interior space and cargo room.
