Review: Ford Ranger pickup
The Ford Ranger has been around for decades, winning many awards in the pickup category. Most recently, this includes Pick-up of the Year 2019 and 2020 by Auto Express. This robust Ford pickup truck is Europe’s best-selling pickup, offering excellent performance, versatility and reliability. As our class favourite, let's see how this Ford pickup compares to its tough rivals in the pickup truck sector, including the Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara.
Why choose the Ford Ranger pickup?
Firstly, the Ford Ranger has clearly been built for toughness and can handle all terrains. With a sturdy chassis construction, this versatile pickup is well suited to hard work and allows for a smooth, comfortable ride. Also, there’s plenty of room in the front seat area, and generous storage spaces too. All Ranger models can tow a braked trailer of up to an very impressive 3,500kg, which matches the Mitsubishi L200. As for the payload, this varies depending on the cab type you opt for. The regular cab has a 1252kg payload capacity, whereas the super cab has a reduced max gross payload of 1197kg. As the double cab has more passenger space, the max gross payload for this is reduced slightly to 1140kg. If you need a pickup truck for carrying heavy loads or towing a big trailer, then the Ford Ranger could be ideal for you.
Interior
The interior of the Ford Ranger is nicer than many other rivals, although with more wind noise, it is also noisier on the motorway than other pickups. In terms of equipment, all Ranger models have trailer sway control, hill-descent control, hill-start assist and stability-enhancing features. Furthermore, standard kit on the Ford Ranger includes a heated windscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, Ford’s clever EasyFuel system and DAB digital radio, just to mention a few. Further up the range, additional features are available as standard. For example, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak features 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear parking camera, sat nav and roof rails. There's also a driver assistance pack available with additional safety features. Of course, if you're considering a Ford Ranger lease then our leasing experts can discuss this with you in further details to ensure you choose the suitable pickup for you.
How much does it cost?
Regular, Super and Double cabs are available for the Ford Ranger pickup. Prices start from around £23,000 exc. VAT, which gets you a tough, capable Ranger regular cab (XL variant only). With every inch utilised for work purposes, the regular cab has no rear seats, allowing for an extended and impressive 1252kg payload capacity. The Super Cab (XLT and Limited variants) has an additional two small rear seats without compromising on an impressive load space. If you would prefer the Ranger Double Cab (available in all trim levels) which offers a full-size cab with a second row of seating for more passengers, then this would cost you around £24,600 exc. VAT. For an extra £8,000 you could opt for the high-spec Ford Ranger Wildtrak (double cab), which gives you superior comfort, premium materials, four full-sized door and extra technologies. Buyers looking for an extreme lifestyle off-roader, could choose the new Ranger Raptor (double cab) as the Ranger's toughest and higher performing version. Prices for this start from just under £42,000 exc. VAT. Of course, with many lease deals available, a Ford Ranger lease could be a great alternative option worth looking at.
Also, as it's primarily a work vehicle, the Ranger's MPG and parts costs will need to be considered. Depending on gearbox, under WLTP rules the Ford Ranger claims around 34mpg with the 168bhp 2.0-litre engine, with the 210bhp 2.0-litre diesel trucks dipping to around 30mpg.
All Rangers come with Ford's three-year/60,000-mile warranty, as well as a 12-year anti-perforation warranty. Unfortunately, Ford's warranty does fall shy of Mitsubishi's five years/62,000 miles warranty and Isuzu's five years/125,000 miles.
The Ford Ranger offers everything you'd expect and want from modern-day pickups. For the ultimate Ford pickup experience, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak is particularly recommended, although whichever version you go for, you won't be disappointed.
