Free to Use EV Rapid Charging Network Operating Across West Yorkshire
West Yorkshire are adapting to the electrification of the automotive industry with their largest EV (Electric Vehicles) rapid charging network. This fantastic network offers free rapid charging to EV drivers until October 2021. The scheme, which first launched in 2019, was introduced as a collaboration between West Yorkshire Combined Authority and its partner local authorities. EV drivers are able to use these charging points, which are installed, owned and operated by Engie, via registration at ev.engie.co.uk.
The aim of the scheme has been to encourage more drivers to opt for low emissions vehicles, which in turn will help to improve the county's air quality and cut CO2 emissions from road transport. The local council have also been open to new suggestions from drivers for additional charge point locations.
What’s the likelihood of a predominantly electric future within the automotive industry?
At GB Vehicle Leasing, we applaud incentive schemes for EV drivers, especially as a recent announcement has revealed a 2030 UK ban on new petrol and diesel cars. This has been introduced as part of the prime minister’s 10-point plan which he calls a “green industrial revolution”.
The prime minister said: "My 10-point plan will create, support and protect hundreds of thousands of green jobs, whilst making strides towards net zero by 2050.
"Our green industrial revolution will be powered by the wind turbines of Scotland and the North East, propelled by the electric vehicles made in the Midlands and advanced by the latest technologies developed in Wales, so we can look ahead to a more prosperous, greener future."

In terms of current sales of EVs, it’s clear there’s been a surge in demand for EVs, and many motorists are feeling tempted to opt for an alternatively fuelled vehicle. In fact, according to The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), sales of battery electric vehicles saw a 184.3% increase in September 2020 compared to September 2019.
That said, at GB Vehicle Leasing we're experiencing increasing numbers of enquiries about leasing an electric car. EVs are not only great for the environment, but it’s also great for your wallet too.
