From now on, zero-emission vehicles in the UK are eligible to have a green number plate. This introduction is part of the government’s plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The aim is to encourage more drivers to opt for low emissions vehicles, which in turn will help to improve the country’s air quality and reduce CO2 emissions from road transport.
By having green number plates, it will be easier to identify low emission vehicles. In the near future local authorities may introduce specific incentives for drivers of these vehicles such as cheaper parking. It’s thought that having distinctive green plates will encourage more people to buy an electric car, especially with the future potential for extra incentives.
The new plates will be available for all new and used zero emission vehicles. Currently, these green plates won’t be mandatory to have on a vehicle, although who knows how this might change in the future. This new introduction comes after the recent government announcement for a 2030 UK ban on new petrol and diesel cars. This has been brought forwards from 2035 and is part of the prime minister’s 10-point plan which he calls a “green industrial revolution”.
Furthermore, the government revealed that £12milion funding for research into the zero-emissions market will also be made available. This will be used to help improve vehicle charging technology, as well as produce greener vehicles. A further £2million is expected to be available for UK small and medium businesses for research into zero-emissions vehicles. The research will be funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and has the potential to create thousands of new jobs.
