First launched in 2004, the BMW 1 Series is currently in its third generation and remains one of the key luxury alternatives to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Each year high volumes of 1 series are sold worldwide, so what makes this model so desirable? Let’s delve deeper to find out.
BMW 1 Series Interior, Safety & Features
Firstly, this premium family car has plenty of safety equipment on offer, although it doesn’t all come as standard. Safety features such as lane departure warning and speed limit assist ensure you have a safe driving experience. During 2019 testing, the superb 1 Series achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating, which applies to all versions of this model. Size wise, the BMW 1 Series is 4,329mm long, 1,765mm wide and 1,432mm tall. In terms of the interior, the BMW 1 series offers a spacious front space, innovative storage and a boot capacity of 380 litres. This means the boot space is marginally bigger than the latest Ford Focus, although it’s not much to shout about. As with all BMW cars, the new 1 series has a luxury feel due to the high-quality features. Furthermore, the BMW 1 Series comes with a fantastic sat nav and infotainment which enhances your driving experience. Now as standard, the Connected Package Professional which is great for Smartphone Integration and access to Remote Services. For smarter driving, the latest BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is available as part of BMW Live Cockpit Professional. It’s important to note though that the BMW Live Cockpit Professional is an optional upgrade, apart from as standard on the M135i xDrive.
BMW 1 Series Price & Specification
Prices for the entry-level SE trim start from £28,425, meaning this is slightly more expensive than the new VW Golf hatchback but not by much. The BMW 118i SE offers fuel economy figures of 47.9 – 49.6mpg and can accelerate 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds. Alternatively, the 1 series Sport and M Sport are both mid-range models. The Sport model is priced from £29,425 and has an athletic look with upgraded alloy wheels and sport seats in the front. For around £1,000 more, the M Sport is enhanced by M light alloy wheels, leather upholstery and an and M-specific steering wheel.
For the ultimate 1 series experience, you could opt for the BMW M Models which are more powerful and inspired by the brand’s motorsport history. Prices for the BMW M135i xDrive start from £39,825 and has M design enhancements making it more agile and powerful. The BMW M135i xDrive can achieve 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds! However, the added power does however mean this car offers a reduced fuel efficiency of up to 38.2mpg. Meanwhile inside, it features new M Seats with Alcantara upholstery and performance optimising elements such as M135i optimised M Steering. Ultimately, the trim level you opt for depends largely on your budget. Our verdict on the BMW 1 Series
The latest version of the BMW 1 Series is a fantastic family car. So, the only question you really have to ask is, which 1 series are you going to go for?
